Early Orthodontic Treatment (phase 1)

Our Approach

At Bean & Geller Orthodontics in Plano, Texas, Dr. Bean takes a proactive and personalized approach to orthodontic care. Early Orthodontic Treatment, also known as Phase 1 or interceptive treatment, typically begins between the ages of 6 and 8—before all the permanent teeth have erupted. The goal is to identify and address developing issues early, such as crowding, jaw discrepancies, or harmful oral habits. By guiding jaw growth and correcting misalignments sooner, we can often simplify or shorten future treatment, setting the stage for a healthier and more balanced smile as your child grows.

Did you know…

The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that children have their first orthodontic consultation by age 7. At this age, their mouth is still developing, and early screenings can help identify bite or alignment issues before they worsen.

Every child’s growth is unique, which is why Dr. Bean evaluates both dental and skeletal development during early exams. If needed, Phase 1 treatment may include expanders, limited braces, space maintainers, or other appliances that guide growth and create space for permanent teeth. Early treatment can help prevent more complex issues later on and build a healthy foundation for future orthodontic care.

Why Choose Early Orthodontic Treatment?

  • Helps create space for crowded or erupting teeth

  • Guides jaw growth for better facial symmetry and bite alignment

  • Reduces the risk of impacted teeth

  • May shorten or simplify future orthodontic treatment (Phase 2)

Is Early Treatment Right for You?

If your child is around age 7 and has signs of bite issues, crowding, or habits that could affect dental development, a free consultation with Dr. Bean can help determine if early treatment is the right next step. Some conditions like impacted teeth can only be seen on X-rays, which is why it is recommended that all children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. While not all kids need early treatment, identifying concerns early allows us to intervene at the ideal time for the best results.
